Nano Banana: what it is, how to use it, and is it free?
Nano Banana is the consumer name of Google's image generation and editing models, available in the Gemini app. You can use it for free within usage limits, and a Google AI Pro plan (€21.99/month in France, checked on October 10, 2026) raises those limits and unlocks Nano Banana Pro.

What is Nano Banana?
“Nano Banana” started as a nickname and became the official name of Google's family of image models built into Gemini. You describe an image in plain language, or upload a photo and ask for a change (new background, different light, an added object, translated text), and the model answers with an image.
What made it popular is conversational editing of your own photos: you chain small requests (“warmer”, “remove the mug”, “make it vertical”) without starting over, and people stay recognisable from one step to the next.
Nano Banana 2 vs 2.1 vs Pro
| Version | Date | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| Nano Banana 2 | February 26, 2026 | Technical name Gemini 3.1 Flash Image. Fast, precise text rendering, consistency for up to 5 characters, output up to 4K. The default image model in the Gemini app since launch. |
| Nano Banana 2.1 | October 6, 2026 | Update to Nano Banana 2: better visual quality, prompt adherence, text rendering and multi-turn character consistency. Announced in Google's developer documentation; Gemini app availability was not stated on an official page as of October 10 (unverified). |
| Nano Banana Pro | November 20, 2025 | Premium, slower model for high-fidelity work. Since Nano Banana 2, Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers reach it through “Redo with Nano Banana Pro” in the image menu. |

How to use Nano Banana
- Open the Gemini app (web, Android or iOS) and sign in with a Google account.
- Pick the image creation tool in the prompt bar, or simply ask “create an image of…”.
- To edit a photo, upload it and describe the change in one sentence: “replace the background with a beach at sunset, keep the face identical”.
- Refine with small follow-up requests rather than rewriting the whole prompt.
- On Google AI Pro or Ultra, open the image menu and choose “Redo with Nano Banana Pro” for a more polished version.
Is Nano Banana free?
Yes, with limits. Without a subscription, the Gemini app lets you create and edit images. Google no longer publishes a fixed number of images per day: usage is measured by request complexity, refreshes every 5 hours and is capped weekly. Paid plans multiply those limits.
| Google AI plan | Price in France | Gemini limits | Nano Banana Pro |

| Google AI Ultra | from €99.99/month | 5× to 20× Pro limits | Yes |

Nano Banana prompt tips
- Describe a scene, not keywords: “a ceramic mug on a wooden table, soft morning light” beats a list of terms.
- Say what must not change: “keep the product logo and colours identical”.
- Put text in quotes when you want a readable title or label in the image.
- One change at a time: successive edits are more reliable than one very long request.
- Check the result: hands, text and product details before you publish.
- Good to know: Google marks generated images with an invisible SynthID watermark that identifies them as AI-made.
Product photos without a subscription
A €21.99 monthly plan makes sense if you also use Gemini to write, search and work. If you only need product photos, portraits or fashion visuals now and then, a pay-as-you-go specialised studio can cost less.
NiceLook is a French AI photo studio. You don't write prompts: you upload your photo, pick one of 23 modules (Product photo, Flat lay, Virtual try-on, Professional portrait…), and a professional prompt tuned for that use does the rest.
- No subscription: packs of 500 credits for €4.99, 1,500 for €9.99 or 5,000 for €24.99. Credits never expire.
- Cost per image: 20 credits at 1K, 40 credits at 2K or 4K, so €0.10 to €0.20 per 1K image depending on the pack.
- Trial: 100 free credits on sign-up, no credit card (watermark until your first purchase).
- Formats: JPEG, PNG or WebP up to 10 MB, output up to 4K. Server in France, and your photos are never used to train AI models.
When NiceLook is not the right choice
If you want to create images from scratch, chat at length with an assistant or freely edit any photo in conversation, Gemini is more versatile: NiceLook is built around use-specific modules. NiceLook also has no native mobile app, no batch processing and no developer access. And if you already pay for Google AI Pro for other reasons, use the Nano Banana that comes with it.
